United States and Vietnam - Trusted Partners Stand Together in the Fight Against COVID-19

The COVID-19 has been going on for two months, Vietnam has been successful in combating the COVID-19. During this process, as a long time trusted partner of Vietnam, the United States has made a lot of efforts in supporting Vietnam. US ambassador to Vietnam, Dan Kritenbrink, recently sent to BizLIVE an article reviewing the process of US – Vietnam cooperation in combating the disease as following:
As the world reacts to the unprecedented COVID-19 epidemic, the multifaceted U.S.-Vietnam partnership has never been stronger.  
The Government of Vietnam has shown itself to be a leader in the global fight against COVID-19, time and again taking actions that are proactive, cooperative, and transparent in managing the health and safety of everyone in Vietnam.  I commend the Government of Vietnam for the actions they have taken, and I thank the Vietnamese healthcare workers, soldiers,and others who are on the front lines fighting COVID-19.  Your work is saving lives.
However, no government can handle this alone.  We are all in this together.  At this unprecedented moment, governments, individuals,and the private sector must all work in concert so that we emerge from this crisis stronger than before. 
Since the beginning of this crisis, U.S. health officials, including experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been collaborating with Vietnamese officials to monitor and respond to the evolving COVID-19 situation.  Over the past 20 years, the United States has invested more than $706 million in health assistance for Vietnam, and over the past decade we have provided substantial technical and financial support to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging and serious infectious diseases.  This longstanding cooperation between our two countries is paying off at this critical time.  The connections established between American and Vietnamese health professionals have been instrumental as we fight this epidemic together. 
A recently announced $2.9 million in additional U.S. health assistance will help the Vietnamese government to accelerate laboratory systems; strengthen case-finding and event-based surveillance; support technical experts for rapid response, risk communication, infection prevention and control; and more. 
In addition to these vital government efforts, the U.S. private sector is also providing the supplies and equipment the world will need to protect itself from COVID-19.  The explosion of trade between our two countries -- more than $77 billion annually -- and high-quality investment have built the relationships and networks necessary to enable businesses to respond swiftly and efficiently to the global need for supplies to combat COVID-19.  
Hanes, known worldwide as a maker of t-shirts, underwear, socks, and sportswear, and the employer of nearly 12,000 Vietnamese, has re-tooled to produce cotton masks for non-medical use.  These masks will be available not only in Vietnam, but in the United States as well.  Hanes believes it can produce 16-18 million cotton masks on a weekly basis, which will fill urgent needs in Vietnam, in the U.S., and around the world.  
U.S. businesses are not only producers of the products and services we need to fight COVID-19; they are also helping to fight COVID-19 in their communities, where their employees work and live.  In ways large and small, the American business community in Vietnam is leading the way in caring for their employees, supporting their communities, and contributing to the effort to fight COVID-19 right here in Vietnam.  
Coca-Cola has suspended advertising in Vietnam and is instead re-directing those funds to non-governmental organizations.  These funds will now support the efforts of healthcare workers and people on the frontlines fighting COVID-19, as well as vulnerable communities throughout Vietnam.
Intel Products Vietnam (IPV) shows that caring for your team and your community is good business.  Intel instituted a child and elder support allowance to help their employees cope with school closures, and recently donated 10,000 masks to the HCMC Fatherland Front.  As part of its $6 million global relief efforts, Intel is matching up to $2 million in employee donations worldwide -- in Vietnam, three charities (Saigon Children’s Charity, Kidspire Vietnam, and Teach for Vietnam) will directly benefit.  Intel has allocated an additional $100,000 to support Vietnam as it fights COVID-19.  
Proctor& Gamble (P&G)Vietnam is doing its part, too.  P&G was recognized by the Bin Duong People’s Committee for implementing policies to prevent and control COVID-19 in its offices and plants to ensure the safety of its employees.  For the community, P&G has already donated 10,000 bars of soap to workers in Ninh Duong’s industrial zones, partnered with the Vietnam Red Cross Society to teach proper handwashing techniques, and given out thousands of bottles of handwashing liquid.  
American businesses are also working together as a team to benefit their communities and fight COVID-19.  The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City last week donated 250,000 surgical face masks to the HCMC Department of Health, in an effort organized by AmCham’s members Pharmacity and Diversatek.  These masks will benefit front-line workers directly involved in managing the COVID-19 response in HCMC hospitals and public quarantine areas.  
This donation was made possible by AmCham members, including IPV, Pharmacity, Merck Sharp &Dohme, Samtec Vietnam, Kimberly-Clark Vietnam, and the faculty and staff of Fulbright University Vietnam, which collected donations from faculty and staff.  
In the north, AmCham Hanoi organized its members and spearheaded a blood drive for the Vietnamese National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Pizza Hut and Starbucks have contributed pizza and coffee to the personnel working long hours in public quarantine facilities and hospitals in HCMC, Danang, and Hanoi.  
American businesses, in addition to being prized employers who contribute mightily to Vietnam’s thriving economy, are key parts of the community in Vietnam, and part of the team working together in this fight.  
The U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) is working closely with the Vietnamese Government to ensure that the economy continues to run as smoothly as possible while every effort is expended to fight COVID-19.  
Its members are advising the Government on essential services and products and critical supply chains.  USABC, working together with the Government of Vietnam, is making sure that manufacturing and logistics operations can continue as much as possible while enforcing strict hygienic and social distancing protocols to protect Vietnamese workers.  
The United States, including U.S. businesses, are here to support Vietnam in this fight against COVID-19.
